Looking forward to Myron Medina's presentation on classic Maya mathematics!
Here is a link to his slides from today's presentation.
For those who are interested, here is a link to Myron's award-winning UBC doctoral dissertation, Weaving Indigenous mathematics: ways of sensing, being, and doing. I recommend taking a look at it -- it's interesting and inspiring!
For your *OPTIONAL* exit slip from today's class:
Please read this short (7 page) piece on Maya head glyphs and mathematics (and more) by Edmonton mathematical poet Alice Major.
Then write your response to Myron's presentation and Alice Major's paper. How might these open up your ideas about mathematics? What might they offer to you as a math teacher?
Your exit slip and response post is due Wednesday December 11 by 9 AM.
Realizing that everyone is getting very tired and stressed at the end of term, I'm changing this from a "required" to an "optional" post. Feel free to write if you have time and energy to do so -- but it is completely optional, and there is no penalty of any kind for not doing it!
